How To Beat This Instagram Algorithm

How To Beat This Instagram Algorithm

Instagram doesn’t seem to be in many people’s good books at the moment. It has become a real frustration for many bloggers and users in the past month or so. Ever since the new algorithm when the app was updated to mess everyone’s timelines up, reduce their following and even delete people’s accounts, there has been a real sense of, I’m gonna put it straight, hatred towards the app.

Instagram plays SUCH a huge part in the job of a blogger, I mean, blogging isn’t necessarily a job for myself but it still helps a lot with forwarding people onto my blog. It’s a platform I’d love to grow and create a bigger community with, but it just doesn’t seem to be possible right now. Having more followers opens up more opportunities for collaborations with bigger brands etc, and to do this you need to have more followers, which at present, I just can’t do! I feel as though I am at a great big stand still, like my account is frozen?

Follow Me @lifeastillyrose (if ya want)

Many accounts have experienced a lack of interaction recently too (such as comments and likes), I definitely have. I can only believe this is all down to the new non-chronological order of the timeline, WHICH DRIVES ME INSANE. It means that my posts won’t be seen by each and every one of my followers (or maybe not for a few days) as Instagram seems to throw a ‘4 days ago’ post on my feed?? Just whyyyyyyy? Please can we all just sign this petition to get our Instagram feeds back in chronological order!! Not only do our posts sometimes not get seen, but we do not see other people’s posts which cause us to be ‘ghost followers’, resulting in being unfollowed, which is VERY annoying. Therefore, I have done a huge amount of research and have put together a few tips on how to keep building up your gram.

Quality content

Posting lots of pictures used to be the best way of gaining interest with your audience, but now Instagram ranks your post higher for your followers based on the interaction, engagement and timing. So publishing posts that are interesting, share common interests of your followers, and are valuable to your account will help to make sure your posts are interacted with. The main key to quality content is to make your pictures look tailored specifically for your audience and to create a theme that is visually pleasing. If you need help keeping up your Instagram theme then read my blog post here HERE.

Promotion On Other Platforms

They say that the golden hour for the most likes and comments is within the hour after you publish the post, to maximise this you want to cross promote the picture on Twitter and other platforms. This will boost your chance of making it onto the explorer page as the more likes and comments you received during that first hour, the higher your ranking factors.

Follow Similar Accounts

This is something I tell everyone who asks me for Insta-related advice, in order to gain more followers you want to follow similar accounts to your own. It could be a similar blogger to yourself in size and content, as hopefully they are more likely to follow you back.

By asking the audience to interact with your post, you are increasing your chance of having your post featured higher on their feeds because they have engaged with your content. In addition, the more likes and comments on your post, the more visibility you gain. You could use comments like ‘Tag your best friend’ or ‘comment your favourite…’ to gain more comments. So to get people engaging with your content on a regular basis you need to interact with them, this way you create a consistent relationship.

Use The Correct Hashtags

Research shows that it is more important than ever to use hashtags to make sure interested users see your posts. It’s also very useful for brands to find your blog if you are struggling to move forward with collaborations. However, be careful to only use ones that are specific to your content as I know of people’s posts being taken down from Instagram, and it is highly likely to be due to the over use of hashtags. It’s good to use a small amount of specific, relevant hashtags, as people are often using too many.  In my opinion ‘less is more’ when it comes to hashtags and perhaps place them in the comment section of your post?

Join Insta Pods

These are basically Instagram group chats where you have certain rules of engagement with the group members. I am in one, which is manageable but any more than that and it can take over your life! We are all expected to comment and like on everyones posts when they upload, this creates a regular amount of engagements on each post, boosting your ranking on Instagram. Therefore, Insta Pods are an easy way of guaranteeing interaction from your audience.

One more thing before we end (can you tell I have A LOT to say about this particular topic?!)… I feel as though smaller accounts like myself who are trying incredibly hard to succeed and grow are just getting kicked back every time they try. It seems like I lose more followers than I actually gain and every time I hit a great number it drops back down again. I feel that as a developing blogger my account is often overwhelmed by tons of bigger bloggers who are finding it very easy to grow their followers at this time. They seem to reach a new huge milestone every week?? Why is that? – because Instagram actively promotes all their posts, meaning that their content enjoys a lot of interaction from users and therefore are far more likely to make it on to the explore page. However, I do know that a few of these bloggers are struggling too, which is more of a reason for us to join together in attempt to beat this Instagram algorithm!

I feel the same as you Tilly! I love instagram so much, but lately it has been quite a struggle. Instagram helps me to promote my blog, which is super important to me and because of this new algorithm, it makes it much harder. I never started an instagram account to get tons of likes and followers, but when you have 400 or so followers and get just 30 likes on a picture, something isn’t right. I spend a lot of time taking and editing my pictures so it really frustrates me sometimes. I try not to think about it too much and focus on people who I see regularly interacting with me/my pics (including you, thank you!) and cherish them 🙂

DREAMY flatlay Tilly! I definitely know what you mean about being at a standstill, I’m finding it pretty much impossible to grow my account as a new blogger without an existing following and the minute I think I’ve gained a few followers I lose them all immediately! Instagram was always my favourite platform before I started blogging so its a shame its such a source of annoyance to me now haha. I’m basically just focusing on posting photos I love and sharing the loving on other people’s, those are the parts I enjoy! Sophie xxx

Ahh it really is so frustrating and I hate how it puts smaller accounts back, meanwhile bigger accounts are growing well! Hopefully my tips will help, you’re thinking positively and posting things you love so that’s great! X

That doesn’t seem right! Even though I don’t have Instagram on my blog, I know some bloggers who do. I tried to click on the petition, but there was nothing linked to it.

I feel the same way. When I dived into Instagram more and became more involved in trying to grow it, I began to feel super discouraged. Say I would gain 10 followers one day to only not see that being reflected on my numbers. I instead would see my following dropping. After a bit of research I found out about this stupid algorithm. It’s super frustrating and you just want to give in. You keep on questioning yourself constantly. As you mentioned it many bloggers feel the same way. You put lot aid time and effort in creating a context, writing blogs and due to algorithms, barely any credit is being given.
Trying to stay positive. Thank you for writing this post!!!! 😊
