Ok, before I ramble on about this ‘corny’ subject matter, let me just make you aware of the fact that I am very guilty of NOT making time for myself at all, so don’t feel bad. I’ll be too busy worrying about school, revising, doing work etc… that I forget to make time for myself. By this I mean just taking a moment to STOP. Drop what you are doing, if it’s convenient, and listen to your own thoughts. Us human beans get so carried away with things, whether or not it’s our own work, somebody else’s problems that you’re having to resolve, because we are so kind-hearted and polite like that, that we forget our own needs. Personal care is the most important of them all. This can be in the form of hygiene of course, but that is NOT what I am here to talk about today (lol), it can also be in the form of mental care – looking after that crammed head of yours that is screaming to have a moment of just pure relaxation. Not working, not thinking. Ahhh doesn’t that sound nice?
1. TAKE A DIP
The classic, most obvious way of grasping that alone time is to take a bath. This is a perfect way to shut everyone out, literally, and gain the privacy that you deserve. I’m not just taking any old bath, I mean bubbles, bath bombs, scrubs, maybe even a lil’ leg shave? Anything to make you feel relaxed and non-stressed. Try putting candles beside the bath to set a calm atmosphere and bring that relaxation level up to the max. If you find it difficult to actually have time for a bath, then make sure to fit it in and give yourself that time. If you hate baths (why on earth would you?! – some of my friends hate them I’m just sayin’) then push the boat out and take an extra long hot shower. Oh this is seriously making me want to jumper right into a nice n’ hot bath right now.
2. SAY NO TO THINGS
I mean it…if you have an event coming up you’re not really feeling then say no. Imagine this, you could either be at an event or meal that you have been really dreading, or at home, snuggled with a duvet on the sofa eating Malteesers and watching Netflix – which one would ya choose? Hmmm, I’m defo for the Netflix and chill. Saying no to things is a great way of buying yourself time and you don’t even have to do anything other than say ‘no’.
3. PLAN INADVANCE
As crazy as this may sound, but if you have a pretty busy day to day schedule then actually pencil in a time dedicated to yourself. This could be ‘baking’, ‘bath’, ‘read blogposts’? Whatever you like to do that gives you a BREAK. This may even be with a partner or friend, maybe go to the cinema, or out for a meal, but make sure you physically put the words onto paper as you will find yourself never having time for these things unless you agree on a dedicated time!!
4. TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS
Something we are all guilty of is hiding away our own feelings, if you talk to people and tell them how you feel, you are getting an better response than just sitting in the bath worrying about how you have so much to do. Talking to people about your feelings can free up that space in your head that is filled with worries; physically getting the words out will make you feel so much better. By doing this you are making time for yourself as you are letting out your worries and thinking about yourself (which isn’t a bad thing), rather than the deadline for your history homework? Letting your feelings out might hopefully make you realise that you do need some ME time.
5. STOP PROCRASTINATING
Just do it! I ALWAYS do this, I put off and put off doing things like pampering myself because I feel as though I should be spending my time more wisely – like doing revision or something? But I’m wrong. You just need to DO IT, the longer you put things off for then the less likely you will actually do it. This works the complete opposite for the people who hate work and doing jobs around the house, and I envy them in a way as I am always putting those things first (most of the time). But I need to just stop procrastinating and put on that bloody face mask!! And if you’re anything like me then I suggest you do too!
