Why It’s OK To Have A Dress Down Day

Why It’s OK To Have A Dress Down Day

As much as I love making an effort with my everyday style, some days all I want to do is dress super casual and not make an effort at all. That’s why I want to talk about why it’s okay to feel like not making an effort, as we all have days like this. Sometimes all I wanna do is stay in my PJ’s all day – however I can’t exactly go out in them (but hey, if you do, then good on you!). So this is the sort of outfit I’d rock up to Sainsbury’s in with my mum to accompany her on the weekly shop.

I think the phrase ‘dress up’ is so overused – “Are you going to dress up tonight?” When in actual fact you just want to tell the person to F*** OFF. Sometimes we feel so unconfident in ourselves, that wearing comfy, simple clothes can reassure us and make us feel at home. Whenever I’m feeling upset or anxious all I want to do is wear an outfit that resembles ME (the cba me); just jeans, a t-shirt and a big hoodie or over sized coat. This way I start to feel a bit more relaxed.

Sometimes when we try to push ourselves to branch out and try wearing something new (I am sure we are all guilty of this), it almost goes a little too far and things start to feel forced. You find yourself feeling anxious, like you’ve ‘tried too hard’, when in actual fact you’re just not used to seeing yourself in something you’re not familiar with. This is the perfect time for bringing out the classic YOU outfit. Just chuck on whatever you feel comfortable and confident in, whatever it takes to make you feel okay again.

You may be surprised by this choice of outfit – truth is I rarely show this kinda stuff on my blog because I tend to keep this side of my style quiet. Fun fact – I love vintage clothing and I love feeling super relaxed and cosy in my clothes. When I was younger I went through a bit of a rough patch in my life and I refused to wear anything that looked too “dressy”. By that I mean anything that would make too large a statement, for example; bell sleeves or showing my shoulders and chest. Now it’s completely different, I bloody love bell sleeves, however I still have that little voice in my head that says “that’s too dressy”. Sometimes I just want to listen to it and wear the things that make me happy. Other times I will ignore the voice and end up feeling completely fine and confident and more myself in slightly ‘out there’ pieces.

But sometimes you gotta embrace the laziness and dress down for once. At the end of the day no one really cares about what you look like and if they do then they are really sad. Just be yourself!

Shop the post:

As you may be able to tell the vintage jacket I am wearing is quite an antique – it was given to me by my Grandad, therefore it’s no longer available anywhere online. So I’ve linked a few similar ones that are in stores now, but if you wanted an almost identical one then your best bet is to raid the vintage shops in London! The hat is down to £2 in the Topshop sale so grab it while you can – CLICK HERE, if it’s sold out then there are similar items linked above. My t-shirt is from Topshop a few years ago and the jeans are Bershka and are both not available online anymore, however similar ones are shown above.

Thank you for reading my lovelies, I hope you enjoyed today’s post!

    Hey Tilly,

I relate so much to what you said here! I went through a rough patch too, where people always told me i was ‘too dressed up,’ or ‘making too big of an effort, it’s not a fashion show,’ and even though it wasn’t a big deal, it really knocked my confidence, and I always wanted to just go home and change. It’s so important to wear what makes you comfortable, and embrace your style, because at the end of the day it’s a big part of what makes you, you.

Lovely post as usual, you’re so good at putting thoughts into words! xx
